Anuradhapura Ancient City
Anuradhapura is one of the ancient cities in Sri Lanka, well known for its ruins depicting early Sri Lankan civilization. Anuradhapura was earlier the capital of the Island (in ancient times) and most of the Kings who ruled Sri Lanka resided in this vast city. The city is now named as a world heritage site by UNESCO. On the contrary to the historical data that indicates that the city is founded in the 5 century BC archeological data puts that date back to far as the 10 century BC. DAY 03: SIGIRIYA – MINNERIYA – SIGIRIYA (Sightseeing: 03 Hours, Distance: Approximately 20 Kms Drive)
Engage at Minneriya for a Safari where if you are fortunate enough you can witness the Famous Elephant gathering. Being part of the elephant corridor, which joins up with Kaudulla and Wasgomuwa parks, Minneriya National Park gives the opportunity to see herds of Elephants throughout the year. Among the 24 species of mammals’ resident in the park are Elephants, Leopards, Sloth Bear, Spotted Deer, Sambar Deer, Wild Buffalo, Wild Pig, Grey Langers, Purple-faced Leaf Monkey, three species of Mongoose, Porcupine and Indian Pangolin. Dambulla is famous for its remarkable cave temples – five magical, dimly lit caves of different sizes, decorated with some of the finest murals and beautifully carved statues, offering an overview of Buddhist art. The caves date back to the reign of king Vattagamini Abhaya, 1st century BC. Nissankamalla, the last king of Polonnaruwa (12th century) and several later Kandyan kings (17th and 18th centuries) have embellished and adorned the interiors of the caves with murals, that are still visible today. DAY 06: KANDY – NUWARA ELIYA (Sightseeing: 03 Hours, Distance: Approximately 110 Kms, Drive: 03 Hours)
Proceed towards Nuwara Eliya while taking a journey up through the hills, passing waterfalls (Ramboda Falls), pine and eucalyptus forests and vast green tea estates. Many optional photo stops en-route. En route, Visit a tea factory, where you will not only enjoy a cup of freshly brewed Ceylon tea but will also have the opportunity to witness the intricacies involved in its manufacturing process. By late afternoon, reach Nuwara Eliya, the “city above the clouds” at 1980m above sea level. DAY 07: NUWARA ELIYA (Tea Plucking Experience) (Time: 02 Hours)
Visit a Local Village in Nuwara Eliya and experience tea plucking (optional or relax at leisure) The best pleasure you will take away from visiting a tea factory would be plucking tea from a real tea plantation. You can also have the full experience of adorning the classic saree that is so synonymous with Sri Lankan tea pluckers. Obviously, men can wear sarongs and you’ll be given your own basket to store your leaves in. You are then taken down to the tea fields with the full kit complete. The local planting guides will show you which tea leaves to pluck to get the best tea tasting menu. The plucking process can be a little difficult to complete, as you will usually find yourself with the tea leaves ended up on the floor instead of the container. In spite of how many leaves you pick, the professional tea pluckers that follow you will leave you way, way behind. They are like machines filling their buckets with amazing energy. DAY 08: NUWARA ELIYA – ELLA – TANGALLE/GALLE (Sightseeing: 02 Hours, Distance: Approximately 190 Kms, Drive: 04 Hours)
Proceed to Tangalle via the lush greenery of Ella. Walk on The Demodara nine arch bridge close to Ella station which is as picturesque as bridges get. Visitors can ride the train over the bridge and also walk along it in the other direction. The bridge was constructed in the early 1900’s and is built completely out of rocks and cement without a single bit of steel. The local name is Sinhala which translates to “nine skies”, due to the framing of the sky when the bridge arches are seen from below.
Optional: A short 1km hike to the “Little Adam’s Peak”. Little Adam’s Peak attracts many travelers who come to Sri Lanka. Gradually with an easy hike up to the mountain of Little Adams Peak you can consummation a worth panoramic view.
